Shirodhara: No Effect On Color-Treated Hair

Any chance this oil treatment could negatively effect one's color-treated hair?

Not that I've seen myself, and not that I've ever heard from the Ayurveda community or from any of my teachers. I also consulted a professional stylist on the matter and according to her, we're in the clear. Here's the lowdown.

In my personal experience giving shirodhara, I have found the oil to deeply soften chemically treated, dry hair. The oil also benefits the skin of the scalp, which we all know can suffer with dryness.

To take a closer look at this question though, I decided to consult a professional stylist.

Samantha Wilcox of Troupe Studio in Portsmouth, NH gave me this advice:
The oils you are using should have no effect on the hair color at all. Rosemary has been known to loosen color, as will eucalyptus. This is because these plants in particular contain components which cause hair cuticle and skin pores to gently dilate, which allows any artificial color molecules to loosen and fade. Since you aren't using any herbs like these, the oils in your practice could only benefit the hair and scalp.
Samantha's advice for color-treated hair care:
Salts and sulphates cause the most fading of hair color, aside from bleach solutions. I actually advise all my clients (color treated hair included) to use organic oils such as neem (excellent for scalp problems and falling hair) and coconut oil as a deep conditioning treatment and a safe effective dressing for the hair.
The oil I use is a tri-doshic, organic blend formulated specifically for shirodhara. It contains sesame and sunflower oils along with five Ayurvedic herbs, all beneficial for the mind and the nervous system. Some of these herbs are also known for their strengthening effect on the hair.
After a shirodhara treatment, it's beneficial to leave the oil in your hair for at least an hour. It's best to leave it on overnight then wash it out in the morning. I provide all the details as to how to easily do this, with minimal mess, in your Welcome Sheet.

When you do go to wash out the oil, put the shampoo in the hair before wetting the head with water. It'll grab the oil better and make removing the shiro oil simpler. For your color-treated hair, choose a shampoo labeled 'sulphate free' and 'color-safe'. And enjoy your shirodhara!

~Thanks Samantha!
